For a first episode, I’ll say that this anime is intriguing… Now when I saw the preview for it some time ago, I was less than impressed. The entire trailer for Bakemonogatari was a slew of kanji and nothing else… up until the ending where they showed us a few glimpses of the characters, which I will say is the sole reason I decided to watch the first episode.

The character designs were stunning to say the least, it’s rare that an artist can capture my eye but Bakemonogatari truly has something special about its art style. That aside I’m still a bit skeptical as to whether or not I’ll keep watching this series, while the first episode did a great job of grabbing my attention, from what I can read it is a vampire anime, and like a lot of people I’m sick of vampires as they’ve been destroyed by modern society constantly overdoing them.

Well anyway, it does look great, and the voice acting, directing, and art style are all a turn on… So I suppose we shall see if it keeps up at this pace.

I hope a good group is subbing this, because while I know a bit of Japanese, I could hardly follow what was going on in this episode…By the way the chick who does the main girls voice is win.

I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, or perhaps you’ve not heard of me, but I’m the guy who originally proposed the “Dormant theory” in Code Geass.

Now if you don’t know what that is let me explain a bit about it. You see about the time Code Geass R2 came to an end people were just going crazy, so many theories, summaries, rumors, etc popped up it was impossible to keep up with what was real, and what wasn’t.

Because of that I stayed away from other people and simply devised my own synopsis of the events and posted it on AnimeNewsNetwork under the name of Sin21.

Now the theory took some time to come to, mostly due to the overwhelming amount of evidence that had to be considered in order to take time out to theorize. Anyway that is the basic rundown of what lead to it. Now for the theory itself.

As I was analyzing points in Geass while forming my post the possibility of Lelouch being alive obviously arised, but the big question is how? Now everyone said he became a Code, but they had no proof to back this up, that is where the Dormant theory came into play.

The overall idea of the theory is simple, when you’ve reached a level of Geass strong enough to kill a code, you obtain the Code from t hem as they’re dying, this could be compared to Sorceress’ in Final Fantasy 8, in order to die they must pass on their sorceress powers to another. With Code Geass in order to die they must pass their code on, as the code is what makes them immortal.

Now the reason why this is crucial to understand prior to grasping the Dormant theory is because if you do not understand this much, then you’ll never understand why I reasoned that the code lays dormant. Anyway I’ll proceed, it is my belief that upon receiving the code, it lays dormant until your first death, that death being the trigger that awakens it.

This is supported by numerous points, the most obvious one being that When Lelouch kills Charles using his Geass, he resurrects as a Code, this much is obvious by the insignia on his right hand. Now for this to be believed you have to assume that Charles was indeed under Geass when he shot himself, and not faking it. Why? Because Geass cannot affect a code, this means that he was not a code until Lelouch used his Geass on him, and he shot himself, thus resulting in his first death awakening his code.

The same could be applied to Lelouch, Lelouch obtained the ultimate Geass strong enough to kill a code, this was made obvious in the Ragnarök System when his second eye obtained Geass which resulted in his Father & Mother deteriorating if you want to call it that. By this we can assume that he obtained the ultimate Geass, which allowed him to kill Charles, and before Charles could die he passed his code onto Lelouch which laid dormant until Suzuka acting as Zero stabbed him.

Now if this is true we’re still unsure if Lelouch, Suzuka, C.C., or all of them had known this all along, there are points to be argued here, IE: C.C. crying in the church, Suzuka’s relentfulness prior to the completion of Zero Requiem, the name Zero Requiem itself. However that much is irrelevant, based on this theory it presents a possible case in which Lelouch could die in essence, and resurrect later as the cart driver. The cart driver is quite the anonymity. I mean the fact they go up the side of his face which is covered rather than showing it at all is rather ambiguous, and then there is the idea of “who else would she be traveling with?”.

There is also the Crane, which if you remember, C.C. did NOT know how to make, as shown in an earlier episode, they tried to teach her but she couldn’t grasp it. Followed by the quote which is unsettling if you think he is dead.

Which brings us to the biggest issue with his death, which is directly linked to the quote in the end. What was C.C.’s true wish? Was it fulfilled? Well lets look at the facts.
Fact A) C.C. Told Lelouch in the Ragnarök system that her wish was to die, as well as dropping hints throughout the anime that she has seen everyone she loved and hated disappear into time.
Fact B) C.C.’s Geass was the Geass to be loved
Fact C) C.C. got tired of the Geass that made her instantly loved because the love was not real.
Fact D) The one person C.C. believed in was only using her to pass off her code

What does this tell us? Well lets look a little deeper, this resulted in Lelouch coming back to the system and begging C.C. to resist Charles, and that only he could grant her “True wish” if you look at the evidence, I would say her true wish was to be truly loved by someone, it’s arguable, but we can obviously say Lelouch truly loved her. Perhaps it was also to not be alone though. Lelouch becoming a code would certainly settle that.

There are plenty of other tiny things to consider throughout Geass, one of the most overlooked parts is, just how religious Geass is.

Charles’ world was the past, Schneizel’s was the present, Lelouch wanted the future. With that came a lot of religious content most people didn’t notice, The place that they killed Charles itself was what I would consider to be god, a collective consciousness of the world. There was also the planet Jupiter being present in so many of the visions C.C. inducded, the planet Jupiter being a planet directly tied to Gods in mythology.

By that we could dig a little deeper as well, Episode 22 of R2 while Charles’ is talking of his ideal world, what do you think flashes the screen?
“Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch’entrate.”

What do you suppose that is? Oh just whats supposedly inscribed above the gates of hell, the literal translation would be “Abandon all hope, ye who enter”. There are plenty more of the religious occurrences in Geass, it is easy to see where they got a lot of their inspiration.

I have one other thing that has been bothering me that I only lightly touched on before, and that is Nunally. There is something undoubtably special about her, and it has nothing to do with Lelouch being her brother…there is something more there, I know it.

Throughout the series she’s been a rather unique girl, when she touches someones hand she can tell if they’re lying, this is brought up numerous times in the series, and when Suzuka was lying about Lelouch he pulled his hand away so she couldn’t grab it.

I WOULD pass this off as just her intuition or something, but the last episode of R2 is what threw me for the loop, when she touches Lelouch’s hand she is flooded with images of the proceedings of Zero Requiem. Was this simply sunrise showing us she understood what had happened, or was it something more? Could Nunally be a code, or perhaps a Geass user? It’s certainly unclear but it has bugged me for a while now.

Well at any rate, I believe there is a lot more than meets the eye to Geass, and I often wonder if they’ll ever make a prequel/sequel OAV, or movie to explain some of it. I of course am very against another season as it would destroy the impact of the ending, but it’d certainly be interesting to see some of my theories correct, or even more interesting to see something entirely different from what I thought.

endrant.

Well if you knew me, you’d know this much: I fucking LOVE Kyou.

Ever since I played the Visual Novel back in 2006, I’ve been addicted to her, the entire time I watched the anime, the only thing on my mind was that I wished Kyou got more airtime, that she got what she wanted, etc. It never really happened though. If anything she got literally no airtime which I felt was just unjust.

I had actually given up all hope of ever seeing her arc get animated after After Story ended, however… the announcement came, and needless to say I was ecstatic.

I raged, and I’ve been raging since, and now with it coming around the corner, I figured I’d take the time to setup a blog to rage upon its release.

So yes the entire purpose of this blogs creation was to rage about Kyou, but I figure I have some other stuff on my mind I may want to rant about in due time…

For now, Kyou my dear, I await you.
